Today Google announced that they are buying Motorola Mobility. This is a significant new step in the ongoing 3-way battle for mobile domination between Apple, Google and Microsoft. It’s undoubtedly great news for Motorola Mobility as it’s effectively securing its future. We are looking forward to seeing some compelling Android-Moto devices in the near future.

The big unknown for us is the impact on Google’s other handset partners, in particular HTC and Samsung who have recently enjoyed substantial growth on the back of the Android platform. It will be interesting to see the strategic choices these two make.  Will they continue to build their businesses around Android or do they switch to an alternative platform? All of a sudden HP’s WebOS might start to look a little more enticing. Maybe Samsung will place more emphasis on their own Bada OS? Will HTC turn (back) closer to Microsoft?

The impact on the dynamics of the app market is hard to judge, however it is possible that this announcement will mark the beginning of a slowdown in Android’s momentum, and the rise of one or more alternative mobile platforms.
