So, just a day to go, and Central London seems to be turning into one giant Union flag. The royal wedding route from Westminster Abbey to The Palace is already becoming lined with ardent royalists looking to secure a grandstand view. From across the UK and overseas, people are pouring in to the capital.
With huge crowds expected and widespread road closures, finding your way around can be something of a challenge. It’s a well known fact that a London Taxi drivers ‘Knowledge’ is an encyclopaedic ‘A to Z’ of London streets. But what about the rest of us? Which Tube line to use? How do you use those blue hire bikes? Where’s the best pub? What’s happening after the wedding?
We’ve compiled a selection of some of our favourite smartphone apps to help you navigate London over the next few days – whether you’re joining-in with the Royal Wedding celebrations or simply seeing the sights.
Tube Deluxe. While the roads in central London are likely to be gridlocked, the tube will remain fully operational. There’s loads of tube map and planning apps available, but Tube Deluxe is top of the pack for us.
Bixou. Prefer to travel above ground? The London ‘Boris Bike’ Cycle Hire scheme has been a huge hit with Londoners, and now it’s available to visitors too. Just swipe your credit card at one of the 400 terminals spread around town. The Bixou app is an essential companion – it not only shows where the bike hire docking stations are located, but how many bikes/parking spaces are available at each one too.
The Good Pub Guide. Once the procession is over and the happy couple make their appearance on The Palace Balcony, where next? You could do worse than a spot of lunch and a pint. The Good Pub Guide has the locations and reviews of some of London’s best pubs.
CoPilot Live UK + Ireland. Of course we couldn’t have a list of best apps without mentioning one of our own. We can only assume that the mobile network will be under some strain on Friday, with the million+ on-lookers texting, sharing pictures and IM’ing their experiences. Irrespective of the availabity of Mobile data, CoPilot Live’s street maps will be on hand to guide you around London on the big day – in-car or on-foot.
And until Monday you can get CoPilot Live UK+Ireland edition from just £16.99. Now there’s a wedding gift for you!
