So this is effectively Co-Pilot 9?

I have v8 UK+IRE, and have purchased the maps for Europe.

If I purchasse v9 UK+IRE, will I be able to use the v8 maps I already have, or will I have to buy them again?

If I have to buy again I may well just wait for Tomtom.

CoPilot Live Premium is a completely new app based on our CoPilot 9 software platform. Maps from other versions of CoPilot are not transferrable. However the new app is available for 50% discount for the first 7 days (until the end of this week).

    Does this include :

    a) voice control?
    b) TTS?

Also the name implies the premium services will be PERMANENTLY available (as part of the price) – is this the case?

Is there an upgrade price to move from a previous version rather than buy outright?

Currently there is no mechanism available to us via Android Market (or iTunes) to provide existing customers with a discount (although we wish there was). Therefore we are offering the app at 50% off for the first 7 days. Many thanks, David

So many questions about the new product, but no answers from ALK yet. I am a loyal Copilot customer, now on my 4th different platform/version. The brief amount of info available suggests that V9 does indeed fill in the gaps in the V8 product, but as pointed out already, is this discount the effective upgrade path for v8 customers? Can V8 EU maps be used with V9? ALK you have a great opportunity here to appease some of the many v8 customers who were not entirely happy with the product and its support, with a great upgrade/migration path, particularly for those who already paid extra for other map regions. Please sort this out quickly and efficiently. Also, where is the EU version in the Android market? I see only UK.

Thanks for the message, apologies for the delayed response.

I’ll try and address your – and others – questions in one go.

      1. Is there an upgrade to CoPilot Live Premium from v8 or previous versions?
Unfortunately there is currently no mechanism that allows us to provide a discount to existing customers through Android Market or iTunes. Therefore we are offering the app at 50% off for the first 7 days on Android Market. This will also be the case for iTunes when the apps are approved by Apple.

      2. Why are we charging for the app?
CoPilot Live Premium is a completely new app, not an update to the existing app. We hope that customers will appreciate that from time to time we need to charge for our latest developments in order to continue creating the very best navigation experience possible. Our existing apps will remain on the app stores and available for existing customers to use as normal. We do think that CoPilot Live represent good value compared with some competitor apps, particularly with the 50% introductory discount

      3. Can v8 maps be used with the new app?
Unfortunately no, v8 or previous version maps are not compatible with CoPilot Live Premium

      4. Where is the EU version in the Android Market?
It is now available, apologies for the delay

      5. Why is traffic an extra cost with CoPilot Live Premium?
Unlike the other features in CoPilot Live, Traffic information is provided to us from our partners. It is charged on a subscription basis, not perpetual license. We have tried to offer the 12 month license at the lowest price possiible, significantly less than competitors

      6. Where is the USA version?
CoPilot Live Premium is available now on Android Market

      7. When will the iPhone/iPad apps be available?
We are currently awaiting approval from Apple for the iOS versions of CoPilot Live Premium. We hope they will be available any day now.

      8. Why is there no information on the web site?
We have just put a completely new global web site live at http://www.copilotlive.com. Please bear with us while the new site gets up and running. You may find that you will need to clear your web browser cache in order to see the new site.

Thanks for your comments, please keep them coming. We will try to respond to future comments as quickly as we can.
      Best regards,
      David

I moved from Windows Mobile to Android last month and the first thing I bought for my new Samsung Galaxy S2 was Co-Pilot. It was rather annoying having to pay for it again, but I did. Now I see this new version and there appears to be no upgrade path. Like the others above, I would like to know where I stand? Do I have to pay again? Please let us know before the 7 day offer expires!

So even though you call this product “Premium” why am I still forced to pay £9.99 to get traffic for a year? It should be free, like Google.

Haha what a big con , they are mugging you all off, you will all have to pay 29.99 every year to get the new copilot maps every update.

It would of been cheaper buying the Tom Tom app as they always support their app.

This isn’t even a premium app really as you still have to pay for things like traffic etc. One big joke. Anyone who buys is mugging themselves off.

Having purchased CoPilot Live Premium for £14.99 now reduced to £12.49 in Android Market. I have found on my first use of the program that the routing on V9 does not seem to be as good as V8. V8 seemed to be more direct than V9. The menus look good but some of the buttons are to small and require you to be a bit more accurate in your screen press compared to V8 menus. I haven’t worked out how to add my own POI’s yet, although I managed to copy over my POI’s from V8, the icons I had drawn myself do not seem to work in V9 + how do I edit them? I do like the fact that now routes can be plotted with traffic information used and alternatives suggested showing time and distance because of the traffic. Apart from the few little problems, I want to like V9, I’m just a bit dubious about its routing at the moment, but 1 day is not a valid test.

So to be clear I payed over 75€ for copilot 8 and for the european maps on top of that, and now am told to throw that in the bin to get version 9 at the full price that everyone can pay regardless of previous usage?

Se condly as you say its a brand new product does that mean we can expect a copilot 9 as part of an upgrade path on this product, or are you really saying you are discontinuing the product that I and others use?

Recently moved from an iPhone to an Android & was disappointed that I couldn’t take my copilot Europe app across & not willing to pay for it again, especially as it’s more expensive on Android. However would like to take up this offer, but can’t see the Europe version available via Android Market even though you say it is above. When will it be there?

So on a day that a new release is announced it doesnt seem that anyone from ALK is monitoring the comments page.

With that kind of “support” i think ill give this product a miss. Way too many questions about premium products not being answered which generally means they will cost extra, at a price which will be super inflated.

ALK probably hoping everyone jumps at the 50% price now so your tied in.

Bought this yesterday for use on a dell streak, installed and working but too many unanswered questions and deafening silence from ALK.

Some of the route choices are strange compared to ver 8, like the alt routes but at one stage on a route it wanted to keep sending me in an endless loop.

I have option of adding addresses to Favourites but then cannot use them as I have no option for them, also no Home / Work option. My Places comes up as a Featured update – Which did not work (keeps getting error 1027 – error in copilot store). It looks like this is a very buggy program released too early. Sent email to alk via support to see what happens.

Hello Phil, thanks for buying our new app. As you have noticed, the favourites functionality is linked to the Personal Connect bonus pack that you can switch-on from MyCoPilot > Features and Updates.

Currently we are experiencing some issues to do with activating the application and additional features (due to current huge demand). I apologise for this, we are working urgently to increase activation capacity. We will post an update on the blog.

WTF is a “Personal Connect bonus pack”? No favourites unless I pay more on top of normal purchase price!?? What other facilities are included in v8 that I would have to pay extra for in v9.

thank you very much for your reply and it’s good news that Southeast Asia version will come out at some stage. However, if the developers could take into consideration the fact that POI search in v8 was shown as some kind of artifacts rather than Latin letters and resolve this issue as promissed in v8 which actually never happened i would be willing to purchase once it comes out. Please let them know that they should make sure that there is no bugs with POIs before they release it. Thank you

    Hi there,

I recently read with interest that there is going to be a new version of CoPilot coming out soon. Having used v8 for over a year, I’ve been mostly happy with it (with the odd quirk).

    My questions are…

    1) I’m occasionally driving along when suddenly CoPilot throws a U-turn (for no good reason) when I’m on a dual-carriageway or a main road which is confusing and I have to ignore it for a mile or two before it sorts itself out.
    2) TomTom offer the IQ routes routing facility – is there an equivalent in the latest version of CoPilot?
    3) Is the traffic service a little more up-to-date than the current one? I find that although there are problems with traffic, usually these have been resolved by the time I get to them. Will it report minor traffic incidents, rather then just the major ones?

Otherwise, well done and please keep up the good work!

    Mikhael

Thanks for the message Mikhael. Here’s some responses to your questions:

      1) I’m occasionally driving along when suddenly CoPilot throws a U-turn (for no good reason) when I’m on a dual-carriageway or a main road which is confusing and I have to ignore it for a mile or two before it sorts itself out.

A: This is probably related to the GPS receiver in your phone. We recommend you place your device in a windscreen cradle with direct line of sight to the sky. Depending on your phone this should help (in our experience iPhone 3G and 3GS tend to drop GPS signal occasionally).

      2) TomTom offer the IQ routes routing facility – is there an equivalent in the latest version of CoPilot?

A: Firstly we offer ‘Alternate Routes’ in CoPilot Live Premium which provides 3 routes to a destination (if 3 practical routes exist). Secondly, if you buy the optional ActiveTraffic service (9.99 for 12 months) CoPilot Live will calculate your estimated time of arrival based on real-time traffic speeds along the route. If there’s an alternative route that is quicker based on current traffic conditions then it will be displayed on-screen. It is not ‘historical’ routing as I believe is offered by TomTom IQ Routes, but we think ActiveTraffic is actually much more useful as it provides the best route now, not in the past.

      3) Is the traffic service a little more up-to-date than the current one? I find that although there are problems with traffic, usually these have been resolved by the time I get to them. Will it report minor traffic incidents, rather then just the major ones?

A: as described in #2, our new ActiveTraffic service uses real-time traffic flow to calculate the impact of traffic conditions on your journey time. We think this is a better way to use traffic – the estimated delay to your journey, and avoiding that delay if it is sever is what we think is of greatest value.

      Hope that helps.

      Regards,
      David

I just tried posting this to support , but having tyoed in twice, to get, page not found, I thought I would try here.

    Just Installed copilot live premium,

    1st route, from SG4 7AX, Hitchin Road to NP19 0DR, Morris Street,

1st route suggested 160 miles 3:40 hours, using maily A roads, when I select alternative, I am presented with an alternatve route 173 miles, 2:49, mainly using motorways, this would be my preferred route, therefore to try to fine tune the routing to my preferences, I selected routing preference, strongly favour Motorways. however It refuses to give the motorway route as the 1st suggestion, when it is clearly the more sensible route given my oreferences. copilot 8 always suggested the motorway route in this instance.

    The email title is: –
“Introducing CoPilot Live Premium – from just £14.99/€14.99″
The price is confirmed twice as £14.99/€14.99 forming the basis of a contact in law because it is not a single misprint and you admit in your blog that the website is not correct as stated by David of Marketing: – “Please bear with us while the new site gets up and running.” Therefore this afternoon’s email must be the latest confirmed price, i.e. basis of contract in law.
Can you confirm you will adhere to your offer of €14.99 as stated in writing by ALK Technologies Ltd. or dare you upset your customers further by not complying with contract law?

So having just brought v8 I now need to pay for V9 to get on-going support….Will v8 still be supported ? I don`t really want to pay for the same thing again when its not really offering any must have features.

Alternatively I`ll just use Google Nav and stick to V8 – which works fine for now.

Downloaded the new UK Premium App yesterday, seems much more responsive than v8.

    Couple of suggestions:

    - Speed warnings should be able to set at say 10% over the limit instead of a fixed amount to cater for different speeds
    - App should use media volume, rather than ringer volume. This is annoying when I have to turn up the volume while in the car and when at work, I forget to silence it again. If it used media volume, this wouldn’t be a problem. Or navigation volume like Google Maps does (not sure if this is just media volume renamed)
    - Should be able to purchase additional single countries (for a reasonable price) within the app

Any chance you could reduce the in app European map upgrade to 50% off (£14.99) during the first 7 days as you did for the pp? I bought the UK version, but now want to European maps. I can’t get a refund, so it will end up costing me £45 instead of £30 all together. If you could do this for just the first 7 days, it would be great!

    Thanks!

    Jason

    1. http://www.copilotlive.com/uk/globalOfferings.asp states that sweden does not have Live traffic whilst you said that ActiveTraffic is available in sweden. Which is correct?

    2. It is indeed confusing that it is saying UK+IRE when I want the nordics pack. Could you please provide the steps I need to take to get Copilot live premium with the Nordics pack? I’d rather not try and end up with the wrong map pack.

Sad that this is only available on android at the moment, I’m still stuck on WM6.5.

Love the product at v8 and don’t mind paying £14.99 for it to v9, I might even go crazy and pay an extra £9.99 for live traffic.

Overall if £25 upfront and £9.99 per year is a big problem, sould you have a £400 smartphone or a £35 per month mobile contract? The cost of the live service is less than a £1 a month, you can’t even get a bottle of coke for that!

I suppose half the problem with having a cheap product is the people that buy it (myself included :p)

We have two apps in USA: Premium and Standard.
      - Standard is a cut-down app with basic turn by turn navigation functionality at an entry-level price. You can choose to buy additional features from in-app
      - Premium is our full-featured app

      Hope that helps,

CoPilot Live Premium should support Honeycomb tablets. Are you experiencing any issues?

I am a motor coach bus driver and I use CPL V8 in RV mode. Is there still an RV mode in the Premium? Also I don’t see the NORTH AMERICA version in the android market. I sometimes go up into Canada and will need the whole North America version. I already paid for traffice subscription for V8. While I know this a whole new app, can’t the traffic subscription be transferred over?

      Thanks Robert,

      1) Yes RV mode is available in CoPilot Live Premium
      2) We do have a USA Premium app on Android Market – Canada maps are available as a $5 in-app purchase
      3) We are working to enable v8 customers to be able to transfer their remaining Traffic subscriptions to CoPilot Live Premium. It is not possible currently but will be soon.

      Many thanks,
      David

Bought v8 with Europe maps two months ago. I just wanted to have it on my Android so I could use it during summer holidays. I used it just once to see how it works. Now I’m a bit disappointed to see that I could have bought this for 50% instead of 150%. Please provide a better upgrade offer on your site; on Android it is possible to install 3rd party apps.

I paid for version 8 of this software in 2009 and in that time I’ve had 3 android devices and ment every time I’ve had a replacement device its been a nightmare to move it across. I dont think there will be a significant (practical) difference in this new version. Why is there no upgrade path after 7 days? I’ve tried getting this software (v.8) on my new Desire and I’ve had no response from the support team. In the end I just updated my 5 year old Garmin PND. ALK just want your money.

Thanks Joleen, we would like to be able to provide a discounted upgrade path to existing customers after 7 days, but there is no such mechanism to do so on either Android Market or iTunes. If that changes we will hopefully be able to do so. Naturally we do hope that customers (new and existing) will buy our new app – we do need to pay our talented developers after all. CoPilot Live Premium should prove to be easier to move to new devices.
      Regards,

Glad to hear theres a new version but i do have some questions.

    1. where is the nordics pack. v8 has one; im using it now.
    2. Will activetraffic work in sweden? I must say that im a bit put off by the lack of live services available in sweden.
    3. Are the maps of sweden updated compared to v8.

Thanks for copilot and your time.

      Hi Mika

      1) The Nordics pack is available within our Single Region CoPilot Live Premium app. This may be showing as ‘CoPilot Live Premium UK + Ire’. Sorry if you are confused over that – we are modifying the listing btw. Nordics maps are included within the full Europe app

      2) Yes ActiveTraffic is indeed available in Sweden. All the other standard Live services are also available there too – Bing, Wikipedia, Weather info, Twitter, Facebook etc.

      3) The maps for Sweden are the latest available.

      Many thanks,
      David

    NOT GOOD ENOUGH

I bought co-pilot *6 Weeks* ago for £20 now I find it is obsolete, bugs (surely not) will be unaddressed.

Support could could not tell me how to connect my device (Galaxy S2) to Co-Pilot Central – 2 levels of misinformation (You need to enable debugging.)

Most software companies provide free upgrades to the next version of a product when a license is purchased within a specific period. ALK has the option to provide upgrade licenses you choose not to. I am not impressed by the idea that for a limited period of time you provide me the opportunity of spending yet more money for a version of the software which given the comments of people here has it’s fair share of issues still. So If I don’t take up your offer I’m then faced with spending £50 in two months software which is not quite as good as Tom Tom.

I too only bought V8 three weeks ago and now feel very cheated as I have to pay again. Other software products I have bought always gave me free upgrades if you bought the product within a 3 months of an update or-write. Not very happy and will not be bothering to buy again even more so as there seems to be issues. I have been with CoPilot V5 but now feel its time to move!

I’m sorry you feel hard done-by. We would offer existing customers a discounted upgrade if such a mechanism to do so was available through Android Market or iTunes. It is not possible, which is why we are having to offer the 50% 7 day discount to all.

“An ALK spokeswoman said neither Apple nor Google make provision for upgrade offers other than free ones. ‘This wasn’t an option for us as the product is
completely new and too different from the previous one,’ she said.”

Really I’m glad your proud for your product, and it is a good product, but your are really insulting your users intelligence if you expect them to accept this.

Your support team claimed that media controls on the navigation screen would be included in a future update for V8 on Android. V9 is here now, and still no media controls. Also, if music is playing in the background, Copilot mutes it during directions. I’m sure that many others would agree with me in that the best way would be to dim the volume of the music instead. Other applications can do this, so Copilot should be able to also.

All we need is skip back, pause/play, skip forward (for the passenger to operate without having to move away from the navigation screen) — and dimmed volume on direction, not muted music. I am disappointed in that free satnavs are able to do these things, but one I have had to pay money for multiple times in the last few months cannot.

    Dear David,
I like the looks of new version. however, i have a concern. Is there Southeast version planned for release? Because so far i see only Europeans and American versions. What happened with the rest of the countries? As i’m travelling a lot to Thailand i used maps of Thailand in v8 without big problems apart from the fact that POIs in search were showing artifacts instead of Latic letters. And this problem has never been sorted out even thought customer service promised that it will be sorted in future updates. If there’s posibility that you’ll release v9 with Thai or Southeast Asia maps and with POI problem sorted out i would be more than happy to purchase it as it looks much better than v8.

Hello Fredman. We are working on a mechanism that will allow CoPilot Live v8 customers to transfer their existing premium live subscriptions to CoPilot Live Premium. It is not currently possible to do so right now, but will be so as soon as possible.

    Is it just me?

I have bought the Europe version of the new Copilot Premium.

OK, I’ve reported the local road that has been closed for 30 years – that’s a map issue, but not on TomTom maps.
    1.
If I plot a route North, Copilot sends me out of the village on the Southern entrance road and if I want to go South, yes, it sends me out on the Northern entrance road. That’s a software issue.
    2.
In TomTom (used on old WindowsMobile phone), if you miss a turning, the arrow clearly leaves the track so you can see immediately you’ve missed the turn. In Copilot, the arrow sticks to the route or just stops, leaving you guessing until it eventually realises and recalculates.
    3.
When it recalculates a route due to a missed turn it regularly suggests crazy routes that involve a long and complicated detour back to the original point you strayed – even if there is a much quicker way (all preferences set to neutral).
    4.
In TomTom it zooms in at junctions. Very useful. Is there a similar option in Copilot?

I’m glad it was discounted – less painful.
I don’t care what it costs, but I will be buying TomTom when it is released.
All the bells and whistles don’t make up for poor navigation.
    Please consider some serious tweaks!

All I keep reading here is that there is no available upgrade path through Android Market to go from V8 to V9 as justification to make V8 purchasers pay the same price as new customers for the new app.

For the record, Android apps can be side loaded, you do not need to go through the market to install apps so this is a lame excuse.

All that is needed is the .apk install file which can then be installed directly from the handset or pc bypassing the Android Market.

This isn’t a hack or in any way illegal, it is an option that is allowed in the application settings on android handsets.

So, please stop using the market as an excuse, and stop insulting the intelligence of your tech savvy android users.

I purchased V8 2 weeks ago and there is no way i am paying again!

Whether you bought it 2 weeks ago or 6 months ago, the price is going to be the same, or at least similar. We’re all in the same boat. Some people are still buying the Nintendo Wii, not knowing that the WiiU is just around the corner.

If you want the newer version, buy it at 50% off like the rest of us have. Otherwise, keep using V8. No one’s forcing your decision.

Please see the below quote from FAQ.

    4. Can v8 maps be used with the new app?

No, v8 or previous version maps are not compatible with CoPilot Live Premium or CoPilot Live Standard.

Could you please explain what is CoPilot Live Standard? How much does it cost, it is not available on either Android Market or Copilot website. Based on the answer I figure it’s not CoPilot Live 8.

    • David // CoPilot Live Marketing
      Posted July 4, 2011 at 4:23 pm | Permalink

@Tom – CoPilot Live Standard is a USA-only app. It provides basic turn-by-turn navigation features for an aggressive price. Customers can choose to bolt-on additional features as they wish, but if they simply want 2D navigation with voice guidance then there’s no need for anything else. It’s currently only available in USA though.

Haha what a big con , they are mugging you all off, you will all have to pay 29.99 every year to get the new copilot maps every update.

Sorry you feel this way. For the record, this is the first entirely new paid CoPilot Live iPhone version for 2 years. We were also pleased to give all of our existing v8 customers a free map update back in December. We obviously hope that our new apps appeal to existing customers, however there is no obligation to upgrade – the existing apps will continue to function as normal.

Hi – our target date is asap – however it is entirely up to the reviewing team at Apple. Given that it’s the 4th July holiday in the USA today we don’t expect it to go live today. Hopefully, fingers-crossed, the iOS apps should be live on the app store this week sometime. We’ll keep you posted here.

Sorry if this is a dumb question – but I have a Windows Mobile device. Do I buy v9 through Android marketplace, or do I need to wait for a different route? And is it £14.99 for the Windows Mobile version, or is that just the Android price?

    1. Why is it that the euro clearturn has more information than the US version? We only get one sign and its the exit sign with the same info displayed in type on the bottom bar, shouldnt their be another sign (or 2 depending.) stating the other roads and options? This really is my only hangup with copilot compared to navigon…the ‘real’ signpost info. Personally I dont see the point of it if its like this for US roads, why not just use lane guidance instead of using this gimmicky feature.

    2. Maps are 30 years out of date in rural areas here in the us. I find this to be discrimination vs. the noncity folk! or is it not? And mapsure doesnt fix half my city. <.<

    3. This new app (despite those 2 problems) is deaddrop sexy =) thanks for the good price points.

    please answer my questions !
And a suggestion: spoken destination name. You guys are soo close to making the perfect satnav app for the smartpones! Just smooth over these small details so I can recommend you to everyone. please *cowers*

Hey, I brought CP 8 Europe only 3 weeks ago and have just found out about the new version! I never had any comunication telling me about the new version so didn’t get a chance to get the half price deal! I’ve been using CP since version4/5 and have no problems with the software-but finding out that a new version has been released literally days after getting the old version has really ****** me off! This will be the last time that I upgrade if this is the way loyal customers are treated!

    Hi,
I have been running the Co-Pilot for a couple of days and have noticed that despite having the Safety Camera warning set-up for 250 feet I am getting no audio warning. Other directions are operating ok. Have I failed to do something or is there a hiccup with this element of the programme.
