CoPilot Live sat nav unveils new features to help drivers keep moving in London this summer

Smartphone-based navigation app will help drivers find the best way in London by avoiding or favouring temporary road restrictions

14th March 2012, London: ALK Technologies, leading provider of mobile navigation software, today announced new features for its popular CoPilot Live sat nav app for smartphones and tablets,  which will help drivers to keep moving around central London this summer, bearing in mind temporary road restrictions.

With these features, CoPilot Live will alert drivers if their route involves restricted roads as they occur, and offer an alternative route if available. Drivers can also choose to completely avoid affected roads altogether, while those drivers eligible to use restricted roads can choose to take these routes automatically.

In addition, CoPilot Live’s optional ActiveTraffic™ service will continuously monitor real-time road speeds and recommend the fastest route to the destination accordingly.

“It has been widely speculated that traffic in London may be disrupted this summer.” said David Quin, Head of Consumer Applications at ALK Technologies. “We hope this won’t be the case, but drivers equipped with CoPilot Live on their smartphone or tablet will have all they need at their fingertips to keep moving – whether that is avoiding delays or rerouting if necessary.”

Availability

Temporary road restriction avoidance will be introduced to ALK’s CoPilot Live Premium UK & Ireland and CoPilot Live Premium Europe apps for iPhone, iPad and Android via a free app update in early summer 2012.

CoPilot Live Premium UK + Ireland costs £24.99 for lifetime use navigation

CoPilot Live Premium Europe costs from £37.99

CoPilot Live’s optional ActiveTraffic services costs from £9.99 for 12 months

Android Market is now Google Play

On a day when the tech news is likely to be dominated by the announcement of a certain next version tablet, Google have chosen today to launch Google Play – a central destination combining the Android Market app store and the book, music and video stores all under one roof.

On device, the Google Play app will be available as a free update to the existing Android Market app for all Android devices running version 2.2 and greater over the next few days.

The transition has already begun online though. Take a look at the new Google Play store right now at:

What does all this mean for CoPilot? We’re still available to buy, exactly as before and updates to our apps for Android Market customers will continue through the rebranded Google Play (or Android Market for pre OS 2.2 users) app.

Introducing our new free app – CoPilot GPS

It’s day one of Mobile World Congress here in Barcelona, and we are pleased to announce CoPilot GPS – an all-new free app coming soon to the iTunes App Store and Android Market.

CoPilot GPS includes the same on-board 2D maps and trip planning that’s available in our paid apps for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets. It means that you can find your way even when there’s no mobile signal and avoids the need to use your data allowance for map downloads. Points of interest are pre-installed, and there’s access to Bing and Wikipedia for finding useful places nearby.

We were demonstrating the app at the Show Stoppers media event yesterday, and it was great to see it get picked-up by some of the leading tech bloggers including Engadget and ZDNET.

CoPilot GPS is not designed as a replacement or even an alternative to our flagship full-featured CoPilot Live Premium app. It does not include voice-guided turn directions, automatic recalculation if you miss a turn, speed limit warnings or 3D maps displays, although you can upgrade to these features via an in-app purchase.

We expect that the new app will be available before the end of March via the iTunes app store and Android Market.

Meantime, here’s the press release.
